Redefining History: History (Re) defined

Autumn 2013

A new arts centre is proposed to provide long overdue facilities for Hebden Bridge’s historic yet burgeoning art scene, acting as an urban gesture to bring together the disparate strands of art scene in the community to converge in the centre of a historic conservation area.

The proposal is the result of consecutive reorganization of the disused site in order to adapt its use and spatial structure better to the changing societal demands. The architecture is a hybrid of contemporary and historical links that aims to respect and accentuate its historical and cultural setting. The project strives to reinvigorate the existing derelict building on site, with the intention to ultimately replenishing the aged listed buildings in the area by keeping the town relevant via active use for public benefit.

Acting as a gateway to the city centre for visitors arriving from Hebden Bridge rail station, the design intends to incite the integration of old and new that can serve as a focal point for the Old Town, which integrate and enhance the experiences of festivities and appreciation of arts through a piece of architecture that translates the identities and values of the town - a place that is embraced by the community and tourists alike.
