Stacking

Spring 2014

‘Stacking’ is conceived as a distinct exercise to promote and value enquiry, teamwork and collective output. It offered the opportunity for in-depth study and the establishment of particular approaches to the understanding of context, themes or processes which informed and characterised ‘The Rebirth of Constructionism’ design project.

Working collectively in group of four, the intensive three-week making workshop has enabled exploration and experimentation aimed to comprehend the limits and strength of plywood panel sheet materials and its relation to the tectonics and techniques of stacking to form vertical freestanding structures.

In order to achieve a high standard of workmanship, we utilised the Laser cutting and CNC milling machines alongside manual cutting tools. These prototype structures explored architectural characteristics such as structural performance, dry fix assembly and component replication and minimising waste as well as qualitative characteristics such as porosity, perforation, layering, light penetration and airflow. The final structures were curated in a small exhibition for public display and review.
