Winter Station

Competition Entry | Spring 2016

Design Team: Eva Chee, Wanqing Wong

'While You Were Dreaming' celebrates time and Toronto's winter weather as variables in the curation of a reflective installation. The structure highlights and materialises the slow 'freeze-thaw' process.

Draping stalactites-shaped fabrics evoke the formation of icicle through freeze-thaw cycle. Gathered snow on the top of the structure will thaw and dissolve fabric dye to stain the white fabrics. Visitors will be captivated by the magnification of the process as gradual gradient of bright colours become more distinguishable along the verticality of the fabrics.

With the passage of time, the surreal installation will be a lively decoration to the pristine winter landscape, enlightening the frosty season with hues of warmth. Environmentally friendly dye will eventually stain the fabric fully to mark the end of Winter. Analogous to blossoming floral, the brightly-stained fabrics illustrate the arrival of Spring, enhancing the legacy of the freeze-thaw process.
